Probate
The Probate Court is responsible for the settlement of estates. Estates are settled through the administration of wills and trusts and provide for the orderly disposition of assets to the appropriate recipients in a timely and effective manner.
The Probate Court is also responsible for the appointment of guardians and conservators, adoptions, and name changes for the citizens of Piscataquis County. Hearings on these matters are conducted before the Judge of Probate.
You may view all Piscataquis County probate records (with the exception of adoptions conducted after August 1953) at www.maineprobate.net. Document viewing is free. There is a charge to print copies of documents. Prices are listed on the website.
In exercising the jurisdiction of the Probate Court, the Judge, the Register of Probate, and the Deputy Register of Probate have the responsibility to fulfill the directives of State statutes to ensure the careful and consistent administration of justice.
The Judge of Probate and Register of Probate are elected offices under the Maine Constitution. The term of office is 4 years. The Deputy Register of Probate is appointed by the Register.
